Arshad Nadeem's hopes of adding Asian Games gold to his Olympic title ended in disappointment on 28 September 2026, when the Pakistani javelin star finished fourth in the men's final at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Japan. His best effort of 80.29m left him 4.06m short of the bronze-medal mark.
The result was a setback for Pakistan's contingent, which had seen the javelin as one of its clearest chances of ending a long wait for Asian Games gold.
How the final played out
The final was held in rainy conditions in Nagoya. Arshad opened with 76.69m, fouled his second attempt and then produced 80.29m in the third round, a throw reported as his best of the season and enough to move him into fourth place. He was unable to improve after that, with all three of his remaining attempts ruled as fouls.
Gold went to Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who had taken the lead with 88.33m in the fourth round and then extended it with 88.55m on his final throw. The bronze medal was settled at 84.35m.
Pakistan's second entrant, Yasir Sultan, did not make the top eight who earned the extra three throws. His best in Nagoya was 73.50m, some way short of his personal best of 79.93m set at the 2023 Asian Championships in Bangkok.
A difficult season
The fourth-place finish continued a challenging stretch for the 2024 Paris Olympic champion, whose winning throw of 92.97m in Paris remains the Olympic record. Earlier in 2026 he finished ninth at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a best of 77.41m, and reports also noted that he had struggled at a World Ultimate Championship meeting in Hungary.
What it means for Pakistan
Arshad remains Pakistan's most recognisable individual athlete, and expectations around him are understandably high. Post-Games reviews in the Pakistani media listed the javelin, alongside kabaddi, among the events where the country had hoped for a medal and missed out.
Pakistan still left Japan with ten medals, its best Asian Games haul since 2002, but none of them gold. For Arshad, the priority now will be regaining the rhythm and consistency that made him the world's best on the biggest night of his career. A best of just over 80m in a season final is well below the level he has shown he can reach, and the coming months of rest, rebuilding and competition planning will be closely watched across the country.
